This recent video is a presentation which highlights CODEX.  It explains the reason why governments are pushing forward restrictions on natural health supplementation and organic foods.  The featured speaker, Ian Crane, presents the future agenda of the United Nations, and he secures his 1 1/2 hour presentation byway of facts and clear images.

The presentation took place this June, in the United Kingdom.

His research about CODEX explains that it is an international trade law which will ultimately control the global food and natural health supplementation network by January 2010.

This explains the Parliamentary rush to pass BILL C-51 and BILL C-52 well before the 2010 deadline.

Any Member of Parliament’s indecision, lack of leadership and lack of passion to speak to Shawn Buckley of the Natural Health Products Protection Association (NHPPA) could possibly lead to Canada’s full implementation of CODEX on both Food and Natural Health Supplements within the next two to five years. Predictions state that over two billion people will face unnecessary deaths if the lowered health standards of CODEX be adopted worldwide.

Health Canada has already approved the CODEX Food Regulations without going through Parliament. This fact was stated at Health Canada’s Public Health Consultations in Winnipeg on June 13th/2008.

Without consulting Parliament, CODEX Natural Health Product Regulations will be have to be adopted in the future by Health Canada, in order that Canada become

CODEX compliant.  If Canada is not completely CODEX compliant by 2010, then Canada will begin to face sanctions by the UN/World Health Organization and the World Trade Organization. This is the economic threat that all countries will have to face if they do not allow CODEX to be adopted as their food and natural health code.

WWI Participants Get WotLK Beta Keys - No, Blizzard didn’t just specifically state that WWI goers were getting WotLK beta keys up front. Instead they waited a week then announced, and are urging everyone who has them to get signed up immediately with their keys.

Interesting Gathering Profession Changes - Another thing we came across as we were digging through game files were some additions to the gathering professions. For example skinning has a talent called Master of Anatomy, which has 6 ranks. Each rank yields 3/6/9/12/15/25 crit rating respectively. Mining has a similar talent that gives stamina per level of 3/5/7/10/20/35. From the large jump in levels 5 to 6 expect it to be a pretty large learning curve, ie. some players may never reach level 6 unless they are a farming machine!

While generally quite benign, I do believe some of these products need to have some form of regulation (natural foods accepted), and a means for achieving this was apparently decided upon many years ago – they need to have THEIR OWN set of regulations; but they certainly DO NOT need to be lumped together with pharmaceuticals.  Some of these natural remedies have been around for hundreds and even thousands of years, and are MUCH less damaging and toxic than pharmaceuticals.  Requiring them to have to pass the same tests and fall under the same regulations as highly toxic drugs that we just created and want to unleash on the world, is really quite ridiculous.

My family has benefited tremendously in the past years by pursuing more natural health care choices, and I would hate to see these become unavailable and/or taken over by large pharmaceuticals.  Our health care system works somewhat backwards in North America – we would much rather focus on healing sick, then on maintaining health…but maintaining health is far most cost effective…and much more fun!  Please take a look at the information below, and, once informed, sign the petition below (of course, only if you agree with it).

On April 8, 2008, Bill C-51 was introduced into the House of Commons by The Canadian Health Minister, The Honourable Tony Clement. Bill C-51 passed its first reading on April 9th. Bill C-51 will amend the current Food and Drugs Act and will make consequential amendments to other Acts AUTOMATICALLY. Greetings one and all! This is our first e mail to you all and it’s a call to action for our community. It is a time for us to show what we can do, as the people, to protect our rights. In this case, it is about the right to use the gifts of nature to heal ourselves and each other. Please take the time to read this e mail, for yourself and future generations. Please spread the word, and follow up with action.

As many of you are already aware, the conservative government, lead by Tony Clement and Health Canada, is putting forward a bill that is of grave concern to all Canadians. Bill C-51 will make changes to the basic structure of our democracy, creating opportunities for corporate pharmaceutical interests to flourish, while the lay people loose our rights to natural medicine.

This is an excellent opportunity for the power of the people to shine! Please take action by calling and writing your MP. If they are going to vote in favor of the bill, ask them why they chose a career in politics. Was it to deepen their pockets, or did they actually have the intention to help people? If they are going to vote against the bill, then by all means, encourage them to continue to support the needs of the people, and thank them for upholding our common human rights.

The Health Minister, Tony Clement has a vested interest in this bill passing. He is a large share holder of Prudential Chem. which supplies several pharmaceutical companies, and so therefore should be asked to step down from his position as Health Minister.

As much as this is a pressing issue for those of us who practice natural medicine, our motivation for taking action here is due to our love of all people, and of course, the amazing plants that provide so much food and medicine for us all. Try taking ginger for strength and stamina, nettle for nourishment and support, and rose for open hearts and trust…and give thanks!

We have seen this play before, so many times in history. What have we learned? Do not give in to fear! This is our chance to shine! We are the PEOPLE! We are on the brink of WORLD PEACE! Its time to TAKE ACTION!

• WotLK Alpha Talents Released - All the new expansion talent trees were released at the Blizzcon International event, and now they have been made public too!! You can see all the new talent trees on everyone’s favorite site Wowhead here. Remember these are Alpha talents, so expect them to change quite a bit from their current state. Especially since many of the talents seem extremely overpowered to most classes current states in the game.
• New EU Realm Launched - Blizzard opened a new realm called Blade’s Edge. This realm is only open to new character creation, and currently no transfers are allowed. Expect this to change in the future, also note that as a new realm the Ahn’Qiraj gates are not open.
• Expansion Flying Mount not a Gold / Time Sink - For those of us with a flying mount already, don’t expect to have to sink a ton of money into a new mount right away once you reach Northrend. However you also will not be able to fly right away once you reach Northrend, you will need to be around level 77 before gaining access to flight transportation. If you are having trouble getting the gold to get your flying mount, try Spugnort’s Gold Guide… and earn more gold per hour than ever before. Even earn hundreds to thousands of gold without ever leaving a major city!!!
• No Major Content Until WotLK - Even though many players, including myself, are begging Blizzard for some intermediary content to bridge the gap between now and the expansion. Blizzard is not going to give in, and will continue to focus all of their efforts on the content of the expansion. While this may be the best decision for the long term view of the game, I know I would sure love some new little things to help pass the time.
• Possible new Talent Trees Prior to Expansion - Netharea tap danced around the idea that they might release talents prior to the expansion for mass testing, much like they did before the Burning Crusade expansion. This would probably help many players to bridge that gap between new content.
• Arena Tournament Rankings - The Blizzard Tournaments continue to rage on, with a Druid, Warrior, Warlock team dominating the competition. With a 50 rating gap between them and the next 3v3 team I think its apparent the hayday of the Warlock is not quite over yet. While the melee heavy team can be difficult, there are many ways to still prevail as this team continues to prove. If you are working your way through Season 4 you might want to check out Spugnort’s PvP Guide. This guide can help everyone from beginners to seasoned veterans increase their PvP gameplay for duels, arenas, and even battlegrounds!
• Karazhan Soloed - Obviously no one soled Karazhan, but one person controlling 10 different accounts did kill many of the bosses without the help of any other players in game. Multi-boxing is a tricky thing, but adds a great obstacle to the game to overcome for those who have conquered all current content!
• Need A Designer Bag? - Woot! With the release of patch 2.4.3 to live servers today the new line of Haris Pilton bags and jewelry have arrived, check out her pricey wares in the World’s End Tavern.
• Patch 2.4.3 Released to Live Servers- As always with the release of a new patch there are some things to get excited about! Yes…it’s true apprentice riding and mounts are now available to players at level 30! I know an alt or two will appreciate this. Kael’thas and Vexallus are now tauntable on heroic mode (this will help!). They have also added some new time management features to the game including an alarm clock and stopwatch. In addition to participating in the AdSense network, you may also be interested in having your site ranked in organic Google search. In this post, I’ll highlight some important points for search optimization. While there’s no a magic formula to make your site show up first on a search results page, there are some good practices when it comes to links, design, content, and the structure of your site.

First of all, as a reminder, Google organic search and AdSense are independent of each other. Displaying AdSense ads on a site won’t change the ranking of the site in Google search in any way. So it follows that sites containing AdSense ads don’t receive special treatment in Google search.

Ranking in Google search is based on many different algorithms, and optimization for search is a long, continuous process. For these reasons, and because the techniques might violate our guidelines, we recommend avoiding any techniques that claim to optimize your ranking very quickly or radically. If you have concerns or questions, you can consult other webmasters on a number of forums, including Google’s official forum for webmaster-related issues.

We encourage you to monitor the quality of your site’s backlinks — links from any site directing to your site. To increase your site’s popularity, check if other sites that discuss similar topics or have a similar reader base are aware your site exists.

Outgoing links are also important and should comply with our guidelines. When you create a link to another site, we recommend first asking yourself: "Is this link going to be useful for my visitors?" or "Is this link likely to be clicked by my visitors?". Don’t participate in link schemes or buy/sell links that pass PageRank, as it is against our guidelines and may hurt your site’s performance in our search results.

Here are some tips for structuring your site:

• Your pages should have a clear hierarchy and relevant internal links. We also recommend creating a Sitemap and using Google’s Webmaster Tools. These tools are useful, user-friendly and will provide information such as where your backlinks come from or which queries visitors used to reach your site.
• Use <title> tags that are explicit and useful for the user. For example, avoid a title like "Homepage" or "Welcome to my site".
• For images, use ALT attributes to describe appropriately what the image is about. We’ve recently created a quick and useful YouTube video to further explain this topic:

   

Also, adding original and compelling content on a regular basis may help Google crawl your pages regularly. It can have the added benefit of attracting links to your pages too.

Finally, design your site with your users in mind, and be patient and consistent in your efforts. To attract quality backlinks and develop your optimization strategy, it’s important to keep a clear structure for your pages and regularly add organic content.

• Championing - In the expansion players will be able to become a champion for other factions. While championing for them and running a heroic dungeon, they will earn reputation for the faction they are championing along with the regular dungeon reputation. This should help reduce the endless grind of leveling more than one character from neutral to exalted.
• Death Knights will Tank and DPS - Blizzard likes the idea of adding another perfectly capable tank to the mix, as this should allow for more groups to form for everything from regular and heroic instances to raids. That’s right, death knights will even be capable raid tanks, it should be quite interesting how the death knight goes about tanking, as they plan to have them use normal abilities to do so. This also means they will need to find a way to balance threat generation while doing DPS, since they would like them to be competitive in that area as well.
• Why Naxrammas….Again?? - Most people did not get to experience this raid instance at all due to the timing of the expansion release. So Blizzard has embraced the chance to retune the dungeon, and allow all players a chance to participate in these epic battles. It is also a humongous dungeon that will offer a large variety of battles, that will maintain their storyline and feel for 10 and 25-man raids. I know I played up to the 4-horseman before the expansion release, and am still very excited to see the changes that Blizzard has made! Get started raidin
• Dungeons and Raids - There will be 8 leveling up dungeons in the expansion, 4 max level dungeons, heroics for each and every dungeon so 12 in total, and 3 first tier raid instances. The reason there are so few max level dungeons is that heroics will be easier and able to be entered sooner, making them take the place of many max level dungeons.
• PvP items through PvE - The recently introduced set tokens will most likely continue to allow players to get the entry level PvP gear, this makes them have less of a grind to enjoy other aspects of the game outside of raiding!
• WotLK Beta Opt-In - Everyone should run over to blizzard account management site right now and "opt-in" to the expansion beta if you are interested in participating. This just lets Blizzard know you are interested and gives you a random chance to be selected for it. • Blizzard Authenticators Sold Out - Within just a few days Blizzard Sold Out their entire stock of authenticators, it will be a couple of weeks before they are able to get more in stock. So until then we will just have to sit tight, and cross our fingers that we can be first in line for the new stock!
• 4th Blizzard Project Still Unknown - There is a 4th Blizzard project beyond Diablo III, Wrath of the Lich King, and Starcraft II that they are working on. It is still undisclosed to the public, so let the speculation fly!!!

• Herbalism Primary Gathering for Inscription - Blizzard made sure everyone understands that both melee and caster classes will benefit from inscription, and also that the base gathering profession for inscription will be herbalism.
• Party Buffs to Raid Buffs - Many buffs that only effect parties will not span the entire raid group. Examples of these changes are Shaman totems, Unleashed Rage, and Battle Shout just to name a few.
• Dynamic Line of Sight?? - A unique idea has come out this week. Arenas will have items in them that will move around every once in a while. When these items shift location they will change the line of sight attributes of the entire arena play. This make teams be more reactive to their terrain, and not able to camp positions so easily. As many of you know, position is one of the biggest keys we preach in our arena sections of the Spugnort’s Ultimate PvP Guide. If you haven’t checked it, now is a great time to do so…we promise you won’t be disappointed!
• Dire Cat Form - This could be a very interesting twist to the feral druid tree. All we know as of right now is that Druid will be awarded some sort of Dire Cat Form. What exactly Dire Cat Form does remains a mystery. So let the speculation begin!
• Retribution Paladins Share Gear - Ret Pally’s will share gear with DPS Warriors and Death Knights. This will make it far less frustrating when that "Ret Paladin" gear drops and you don’t even have one in your party or raid. They also plan to make Ret Paladin DPS more effective, and slightly less gear dependant.
• DPS and Protection Warrior Changes -Blizzard wants to give DPS warriors the ability to tank when called upon without always changing talent specs, and they also would like to give Protection Warriors the ability to DPS a little better without changing specs. One of the moves towards this will be the Shockwave Talent for Protection Warriors.
• Heroic Instances Will Be "Easier" - This doesn’t necessarily mean that you will breeze through instances with all green gear. First, they are removing attunement for the heroic instances. Second, they are trying to balance fights so that no encounters call for a specific type of tank. This will make it much easier to pull together a viable group for an instance.
• Hunter Pets Have Exclusive Talent Trees - All hunter pets will now have three separate talent trees just like a normal character. They will have a tanking talent tree, a DPS talent tree, and a utility talent tree. Each type of pet will also have a completely different talent tree compared to other pet types. This is a great addition to the game, and really has been long overdue. Bravo Blizzard for finally getting around to implementing this idea!

• Diablo III Teaser Video - Blizzard released a teaser video that can be viewed here, and for those of you that Blizzard is blocked at work on YouTube(if they don’t block that too).

This is a high quality video that shows a lot of what is to come in this highly anticipated RPG! • Barbarians Remain - One of the toughest characters from the previous Diablo games remain, the Barbarian looks to be even more bad ass than before. I know I can’t wait to whirlwind through some skeletons!

Players should be extremely excited for this new season, as the level of gear is a significant increase for PvP and PvE purposes. I know I can’t wait to spend my saved arena points on some awesome new gear. However I am sad to surrender my 2,000 rating which I will have to build up again!
• No Beta testers Yet! - Blizzard has not opened up Wrath of the Lich King for beta testers yet. So if you are receiving e-mails guaranteeing you will get into the beta they are a scam, and plan to steal your account! Be aware, and remember that Blizzard will never ask you for your account details such as your password, EVER!
• Patch 2.4.3 available on the PTR - Blizzard has launched 2.4.3 to the PTR, so get over and transfer your characters on and start practicing the new boss Lord Ahune for the Fire Festival. He has a very nice loot table that you can find here on Wowhead.
• Magister’s Terrace Nerfed -Players will find most of the trash to be significantly easier now. Most importantly the Glaive Throw stun was removed, along with reduced damage output from nearly every dangerous trash mob found inside Magister’s Terrace. Some boss fights were also nerfed, Vexallus was actually brought down to what I think is on par with his place in the dungeon. The Princess Delrissa fight was also nerfed by lowering the damage of the rogue and warrior, so this fight should be cake now as they were the only dangerous ones anyway!
• Eredar Twins Loot Increased - Now the Eredar twins will drop the increased loot no matter which order you kill them in. So happy sunmoting!!!
• Raid Instance Summoning Bug Fixed - Players can now be summoned to a raid instance from a heroic dungeon. This will be a nice feature for those just wrapping up a daily heroic when the raid is starting.
• Curse of Elements / Shadows Changes in 2.4.3 - Curse of Shadows has been removed and Curse of Elements now includes damage increases for Arcane and Shadow damage also. This will reduce the stigma of having to bring 3 to 4 warlocks to each and every raid!
• Haris Pilton Bag and Jewelry Seller Extraordinaire in 2.4.3! - You have got to love Blizzard’s sense of humor, and their willingness to give players what they ask for. Haris Pilton will offer players the right to buy 22 slot bags, albeit for a hefty price of 1,200 gold. This is another measure to pull gold out of the highly inflated economy, since they were not quite prepared for the huge influx of gold the daily quests would yield. I know I have 4,800 gold waiting to buy 4 of these for my druid!!! This is not a limited supply item either, so start saving right away!! They are BoE, so the really rich players can buy them for their bank alts too!

On April 8, 2008, the Harper government introduced Bill C-51 as an amendment to the Food and Drugs Act. If passed into law, Canadians will no longer have the freedom to choose between pharmaceutical drugs and natural health products. The two categories we now have, namely drugs and natural health products, would be merged into one category called “therapeutic products”.

Under Bill C-51, neutraceuticals derived from foods essential to life would no longer be presumed safe, but become subject to drug testing routines and prescription requirements. At the present time, only pharmaceutical drugs are presumed toxic until clinical trials show at what dosage they might have some therapeutic benefit.

Other key points in Bill C-51 include the following:

This bill changes the definition of “sell”, such that even health-related advice for which one doesn’t get paid would be subject to Health Canada’s approval or else be a crime. (For example, if a writer in Vitality stated that Vitamin C helps to prevent cancer, this would be considered a crime.)

Upon suspicion that one is in possession of unapproved health products, Health Canada inspectors would have powers of enforcement exceeding those of the police, such as entering a home or business without a warrant and removing anything they wish, making you pay for the cost of removal, freezing your bank account so you can’t take legal action, and fining you up to $5 million for disobeying the orders of Health Canada inspectors. (Better hide those calcium supplements under the mattress and flush your Vitamin D down the toilet if you hear a knock on the door.)

If, in the Minister’s sole discretion, he decides it would be good for Canada to incorporate a foreign government’s regulatory protocol, such as Codex, it would become part of Canadian law without parliamentary debate, simply by a cabinet decision (Order in Council).
Any research a university or institution might initiate involving nutrition and disease would have to be approved by the Minister who would decide whether the outcome of such research would be desirable, in terms of risk-benefit considerations normally applied to toxic substances. If the Minister doesn’t like the proposed research project, it would not be approved.

Bill C-51 is likely in violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and our criminal code, as well as the rules governing scientific research, and ignores some of the most important Supreme Court decisions of the last 20 years. Those decisions affirmed that disobeying the law is not a crime if such disobedience prevents more harm than would have occurred had the law been obeyed, as in the 2004 Truehope case.

What this bill does do well, however, is to prepare Canada for joining the ongoing international United Nations Codex efforts to regulate foods and drugs world-wide according to the one-size-fits all corporate model enforced by the World Trade Organization. It also serves the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) process which has a central requirement that Canada, the US, and Mexico “harmonize” their health care systems and especially the regulatory institutions governing therapeutic products. Yet the latest polls indicate that 87% of Canadians are opposed to this process, especially with regard to health care and therapeutics.

A HISTORY OF GOVERNMENT HOSTILITY TOWARDS NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTS

Back in 1998, Chretien’s Liberals tried to amend the Food and Drugs Act so that food-derived therapeutic products (i.e. vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbal medicines, etc.) would be classified as drugs, thereby starting the harmonization process with the United Nations’ Codex Alimentarius agenda, which calls for maximum upper limits on nutrient dosages, as well as toxicity tests. Under Codex, natural products would become drastically more expensive as many would require prescriptions from doctors (whose knowledge of nutritional medicine is almost nonexistent).

So, in 1998, under the rallying cry “Don’t treat our foods as drugs!”, Canadians caused what lawyer Shawn Buckley describes as “the most successful petition drive in Canadian history”. Hit by an avalanche of outrage, Health Minister Alan Rock tossed this hot potato to the House Standing Committee on Health which came up with 53 excellent recommendations for amendments to the Food and Drugs Act to “reflect contemporary scientific thought [because] the weight of modern scientific evidence confirms the mitigation and prevention of many diseases … through the judicious use of Natural Health Products.”

We are still waiting for those 53 recommendations to be implemented.

In 2003, Conservative MP Dr. James Lunney (Nanaimo-Albertini, BC), a chiropractor and naturopath, sponsored Bill C-420 which would have removed all food-derived neutraceuticals from the drug category (and the reach of Codex). It was supported by more than 120,000 signatures. In his September 2003 Vitality article, Lunney called for action: “It’s time to take the club out of the hand of hostile Health Canada bureaucrats who know nothing about health and care even less.”

His comments came in the wake of Health Canada having shut down the Truehope research project, run by the University of Calgary and a Harvard University psychiatrist, involving some three thousand people being treated with vitamins and minerals for extreme manic depression. It was shut down when preliminary results showed this treatment to be far superior to conventional drug therapy and without side effects (all published in the mainstream medical journals).

Truehope disobeyed Health Canada orders and continued to provide the treatment to the trial participants in accordance with international medical law. Health Canada sued Truehope.

The court found Truehope’s disobedience to be legal, citing previous supportive Supreme Court judgments. Health Canada’s conduct was found to be arbitrary and inhumane. (Bill C-51 would make Health Canada’s treatment of Truehope the norm and allow it to ignore those Supreme Court decisions as well as medical law.)

It is interesting to note that Lunney’s Bill C-420 originally had the full support of Stephen Harper, at that time the leader of the Opposition. On April 27, 2004, he wrote the following statement to many Canadians, including me: “Your comments and concerns regarding unrestricted access to natural health products and [about the dangers of the] Codex Alimentarius are understandable. Please know that the Conservative Party of Canada supports freedom of choice for complementary treatments and natural health products. We believe that Canadians should have access to a wide range of health treatments, as well as an assurance that the products available to them are safe and effective.”

He was endorsing MP James Lunney’s intent “to put the brakes on a bureaucracy out of control”. Harper’s Conservatives proceeded to promise Canadians freedom of choice between toxic drugs and bio-identical and nutritional therapies that science has empirically shown actually work. But C-420 died when the Martin government fell.

WHAT HAPPENED, STEPHEN?

Introduced by the government on April 8, Bill C-51 is quite literally a Big Pharma bill. That’s because Big Pharma is Health Canada’s employer, not only through their user fees for product evaluations done according to their own time-lines, but because our government actually put Big Pharma in charge on January 6, 1996. On that date, the Minister of Health passed an Order in Council and bypassed parliamentary debate. This Order redefined the “client” it serves: all regulatory oversight of foods and drugs henceforth serves the manufacturer, the Act’s “client” – not the Canadian people. That’s why, ever since the Mulroney era, it doesn’t matter whether the Conservatives or the Liberals are elected: both have done exactly what their (commonly shared) corporate clients want them to do. And now they are doing it again.

THE PHARMACEUTICAL AGENDA

Understandably, Big Pharma publications nowadays extol the virtues of “biologicals”, bio-identical compounds that are liver-friendly, or applications that by-pass the liver to reduce toxicity. If pharmaceutical companies hope to survive at all, they absolutely must make the transition into biologically friendly therapy. So, why sell their bio-identical raw materials to much smaller natural products companies (as they are now) when you could make expensive drugs from them yourself? Big Pharma persuaded Australia to pass a law similar to our proposed C-51 some years ago which, as predicted, killed all small and mid-sized natural health product companies. Now Australia has only one large nutraceutical company producing high-priced poor-quality stuff; innovation is also dead. Big Pharma has the whole market there.

Due to the enormous liability problems associated with toxic drugs, pharmaceutical stocks are rapidly becoming as difficult to sell as gas-guzzling SUVs. Health Minister Tony Clement found that out personally: until recently he owned 25% of Prudential Chem Inc., a company that sells chemicals to drug companies. He was compelled to sell those shares after the government’s ethics committee told him this was a conflict of interest. The major investment analysts have classified many pharmaceutical stocks as “don’t buy” or “sell”.

Meanwhile, to help boost its profit margins, the pharmaceutical industry is lobbying hard to get the Canadian government to legalize TV commercials for drugs, a practice known as Direct to Consumer Advertising. In the U.S., drug sales rose by more than 40% in one year when DTCA was legalized there, and New Zealand (the only other country that permits DTCA) almost killed its health care system because of the increased cost of drugs. Now they are reversing this policy. Nevertheless, C-51 has a provision that would remove the current barriers against Direct To Consumer Advertising in Canada.

About 70% of Canadians are taking bio-identical natural medicines free of deadly side effects and, therefore, do not require additional medication. But if you take SSRI antidepressants for a long time, you are likely to get diabetes or cancer - and that’s very good for the drug business. St. John’s Wort and Inositol are natural, cannot be patented, have no side effects, and are likely to cure the depression – and that’s not good for the drug business. Obviously, Big Pharma believed that something had to be done to scare the living daylights out of the natural products industry and to take over this potentially lucrative market. Bill C-51 does just that.

MEDICAL HOMELAND SECURITY

The single best source for understanding C-51 is the legal analysis provided by lawyer Shawn Buckley, the president of the Natural Health Products Protection Association, who won the Truehope case. In addition to the main points listed at the beginning, he also identifies the following issues in this proposed Bill:

C-51’s licensing provisions for natural health products are so inappropriate to these substances that “over 60% [now on the market] will fail the licensing process and become illegal.”
Health Canada would only issue market authorizations if satisfied “that the benefits that are associated with the therapeutic product outweigh the risks” – and the “risks” are not defined! Buckley observes that Health Canada might consider it a risk that “people will not seek ‘proper’ (i.e. mainstream) medical treatment if they take a natural health product.”
The search-and-seizure powers in C-51 dispense with basic principles such as “reasonable grounds”, warrants, court applications – known as checks and balances. When, in the opinion of Health Canada, we need to be protected against a life-enhancing nutrient, they can enter a home or business at their disgression to confiscate the offending item, and our legal rights are irrelevant.
Since Health Canada inspectors fully expect that obstinate citizen may refuse to give up their vitamins, or some bright scientists might discover a potential nutritient-based cure for some deadly disease, C-51 proposes penalties with real bite, such as $5 million and/or 2 years in jail. Independent thought, bright ideas, and personal autonomy would be quashed. “Why is it necessary,” asks Buckley, “to raise the primary penalty by multiples of 500 and 1,000? This is probably unprecedented in Canadian history.”
It is indeed unprecedented in Canadian history that a bunch of bureaucrats, government lawyers, and undoubtedly their friends from industry created a Bill which is so strategically focused on how to control or extinguish medical research, therapeutic initiative, informed consent, and just plain old free enterprise.

HAS GOVERNMENT ABANDONED THE HEALTH OF CANADIANS?

The idea that Harper’s Conservatives have the public’s best interest in mind is beginning to appear absurd. Consider that a few weeks ago, they defeated Bill C-517 which sought to make the labeling of genetically engineered foods mandatory, as is already the case in 40 countries. The disastrous health effects of those Frankenfoods are fully known now and documented in mainstream medical and agricultural research. Yet not even the loss of international trade entered the minds of those 152 MPs who voted this bill down. Hardly any country buys our canola and beef anymore because of GMO contamination and the use of carcinogenic hormones and antibiotics which are also the cause of deadly superbugs. Quite aside from the health issues involved, bill C-517 was an absolute necessity to regain increased access to international trade.

As for the proposed Bill C-51, it cannot, must not, ever go to second reading because it clearly violates some of the most basic human rights. C-51 is probably criminal and certainly absurd. This Bill suggests a mind-set that no democratic government can be permitted to indulge in on any topic.

Health Canada’s history is one of allowing a never-ending stream of carcinogens, neurotoxins, gender-benders, and ecologically disrupting substances into the Canadian marketplace. Medical practice and agriculture are now replete with drugs carrying deadly warnings and agricultural practices so lethal, most of the rest of the world outlawed them decades ago.

With natural health products under attack from C-51, Canada’s medical system, already close to collapse, could easily become totally overwhelmed as all those hundreds of thousand of Canadians relying on vitamins, herbs, and minerals to keep them healthy will proceed to get sick or sicker when they’re removed from the marketplace.

Faced with evidence of such abysmal stupidity, we cannot afford to leave our health to the mercy of this government. Fortunately, there is massive opposition to Bill C-51 in the making, including the Canadian Health Coalition, the Council of Canadians, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE – 340,000 members), and many doctors working in nutritional and complementary medicine. Nutraceutical producers are becoming noisy and articulate.

The second reading of Bill C-51, scheduled for May 8, mysteriously was cancelled. Google might have the answer for the government’s timely hesitation: on May 7, Google had 60,000 entries for “Bill C-51 + Canada”. By May 11 it was 70,500. Most of them are against it.

A NEW THREAT ON THE HORIZON
Bill C-52 Rears Its Ugly Head

While completing this article in C-51, I was made aware of a new threat – Bill C-52. While C-51 targets the freedom to manufacture natural health products, freedom of research, and the personal right to health care choices, Bill C-52 expands the government’s powers by including all businesses. Download the legal analysis of C-52 from the Natural Health Products Protection Association website (nhppa.org).

The government’s and the Prime Minister’s television ads and comments on C-52 want us to believe they protect consumers. This is NOT true. Instead, C-52 removes fundamental safeguards on privacy and property rights, the requirement for warrants, access to the courts etc. in direct violation of Section 8 of the Charter and Criminal Code provisions, the basis of Common Law for about a thousand years.

Having passed second reading on May 1, C-52 could, by way of a cabinet amendment (i.e. without parliamentary debate), add C-51 to its regulatory Schedule I, so the government would give themselves both Bills regardless of what Canadians say. I believe it is our duty to inform ourselves about both Bills and stop our government from committing high treason against fundamental human rights. Schedule a visit to your local MPs as soon as possible. Do not go alone, always have a witness or two or three. Hand them Buckley’s analysis and demand that C-51 be killed.

Write to Prime Minister Harper and tell him what you think. Be polite.

If you’re a media planner at an ad agency, you know that planning an online display buy can be challenging, particularly in scaling your campaign’s reach while keeping it relevant for your target audience. Plus, how do you keep track of the millions of sites out there that might be just right for your campaign?

To make your life easier, we’re introducing Google Ad Planner, a research and media planning tool that connects advertisers and publishers. When using Google Ad Planner, simply enter demographics and sites associated with your target audience, and the tool will return information about sites (both on and off the Google content network) that your audience is likely to visit. You can drill down further to get more detail like demographics and related searches for a particular site, or you can get aggregate statistics for the sites you’ve added to your media plan.

While Google Trends for Websites, announced last week, is designed for all users, Google Ad Planner is designed with media planners in mind. Using Google Ad Planner, you can quickly create media plans and export to a .csv file, which can be opened in most spreadsheet applications. Or, you can export to DoubleClick’s MediaVisor, which helps you manage all your other media planning, buying and campaign management activities.
